Full article: Recycling of submerged arc welding slag for ...

ABSTRACT. The objective of this paper is to investigate the utilization of Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) slag as a fresh flux for sustainability. Certain alloying elements were added to the crushed slag to adjust the resultant composition of the weld metal as per American Welding Society (AWS) A5.17 and operational characteristics such as arc stability.

Welding Slag

Thanks for your info Tommyjoking, but the slag came from Submerged Arc Welding as you know it generates a huge amount of slag. In history, we normally crushed the slag to consider as Recovered, mixed it with virgin Flux (25% Recovery and 75% Virgin) and used it in production, but we stop that practice due to Customer requirements and related quality issues.

Slag recycling in submerged arc welding and its influence ...

Slag generated during conventional submerged arc welding (SAW) has been recycled by mixing varying percentages of crushed slag with fresh flux to use in subsequent runs. The influence of using flux-slag mixture on various aspects of SAW weld parameters of bead geometry have been investigated in a quantitative basis. Slag has been reprocessed and …

Welding Slag - How to Deal With It Correctly • Good Welders

Welding slag is a porous crust of black color, which forms on the surface of the weld. After cooling, it is easily beaten off with a hammer. The waste consists of oxides of billet and electrode material, manganese, silicon and other elements.

Sandblasting - American Welding Society

"Black Beauty" is crushed slag if I remember correctly. It is abrasive in contrast with steel bead, which would have a greater tendency to smear and peen the steel surface. In any case, if PT is the NDT to be performed, dirt and debris from grit blasting, shot blasting, etc., can definitely "clog" the openings to the discontinuity.

Functionally, you would need to verify (by testing samples of weld using the re-crushed slag) that the "process" is correct. It isn't that any PQR or WPS is "perfect" or is bureaucratically "impeccably written" by a lawyer, it is that the weld produced by a competent welder using that WPS is able to make quality welds under the same circumstances as the …
